The Basics

Swipe in any direction to slide all tiles on the board. When two matching tiles collide, they merge into the next tier. Start with Raw Earth (2) and work your way up through 11 tiers of alchemical transmutation. The game ends when no moves remain.

The Transmutation Chain

Master the full progression from base matter to legendary elixir. Each tier requires merging two tiles of the previous tier:

• Tier 1 — Raw Earth (2) — The most common element. Appears on almost every move.
• Tier 2 — Volcanic Sulfur (4) — Two clumps of earth fuse into smoldering sulfur.
• Tier 3 — Lead Ingots (8) — Heavy and dull, but essential for what comes next.
• Tier 4 — Fool's Gold (16) — It glitters, but it is not the real thing. Keep going.
• Tier 5 — Oxidized Copper (32) — A green-tinged metal, partway through the transmutation.
• Tier 6 — Pure Silver (64) — A precious metal. You are halfway to the Elixir.
• Tier 7 — Cobalt Shard (128) — A deep blue crystal with unusual properties.
• Tier 8 — Quicksilver (256) — Liquid metal that shimmers and shifts on the board.
• Tier 9 — Gold Bars (512) — True gold at last. But the alchemist seeks something higher.
• Tier 10 — Alchemy Stone (1024) — The philosopher's stone. One step from immortality.
• Tier 11 — Elixir of Life (2048) — The ultimate prize. You win when this tile appears.

Scoring

Every merge adds points equal to the value of the new tile created. Merging two Raw Earth (2) tiles creates Volcanic Sulfur (4) and awards 4 points. Merging two Alchemy Stones (1024) into the Elixir of Life (2048) awards 2048 points. Your total score is the sum of all merges performed during the game.

After 2048

Reaching the Elixir of Life is the primary goal, but the game does not end there. After creating the 2048 tile, you can keep playing to push your score even higher. Tiles continue to merge beyond 2048, and experienced players can aim for tiles worth 4096 or even 8192. The board only locks when no valid moves remain.

The Corner Strategy

The single most important technique in 2048 is the corner strategy. Pick one corner (most players use the top-left or top-right) and commit to keeping your highest tile there for the entire game. Never make a move that would dislodge it.

• Anchor your best tile in a corner. Keep your highest-tier tile locked in one corner and build around it. This gives your board structure and prevents your best tile from getting stranded.
• Fill the anchor row. If you anchor to the top-left, keep the entire top row filled with tiles in descending order from left to right. This prevents the anchor tile from sliding out of position.
• Build chains, not random merges. Arrange tiles so that each merge cascades into the next. A well-built chain can merge 3 or 4 tiles in a single swipe, dramatically boosting your score.
• Avoid the opposite direction. If your anchor is in the top-left, avoid swiping down whenever possible. Swiping down pulls your anchor away from its corner and can ruin a carefully built board.

General Tips

• Don't chase merges. Let them come to you. Forcing a merge across the board often creates more problems than it solves.
• Watch the progression bar. The tile progression bar at the bottom shows what tier comes next, helping you plan your moves ahead.
• Keep the board clean. Too many small tiles scattered around the board creates gridlock. Focus on consolidating small tiles before they overwhelm your available space.
• Think two moves ahead. Before every swipe, consider where the new tile will spawn and whether the resulting board state still leaves you with good options.
• Patience over speed. There is no time limit. Take your time with every move. A single careless swipe can end a game that took 20 minutes to build.
